Criminology in Côte d’Ivoire: Life and Survival Fifty Years Later explores the challenges and issues faced by criminology in the francophone African country of Côte d'Ivoire. The introduction of criminology in Côte d'Ivoire, facilitated by the Centre International de Criminologie Comparée (CICC) in Montreal with the support of the Canadian International Development Agency, was influenced by scientific, diplomatic, political, and social factors.
With forty years of teaching and thirty years of research, the academic and scientific life of criminology in Côte d'Ivoire unfolds in a largely unfavorable environment for its development. Despite the inherent challenges of local culture and the idealistic vision of academics from the former colonizing country, where establishing a criminological discipline seemed impossible, criminology has persisted, evolved, and taken root.
This work provides insight into the dynamics of criminology education and associated pedagogical practices. It examines the progress of criminological research at the Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny, addressing its survival challenges, social impact, the issue of graduate integration, and offering reflections on the development of criminology within Ivorian society.
