Tuesday, April 1, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
Hybrid format: Room 1051, Pavillon Michel-Sarrazin, UQTR, and online
This lecture presents the findings of a systematic review and meta-analysis of 55 published studies examining exposure to hate speech both online and in traditional media. The conclusions reveal significant negative effects on individuals and groups, including the emergence of prejudice, decreased intergroup trust, increased violent behaviors, and a deterioration of psychological well-being. Paradoxically, the research also highlights a lack of emotional response to such content, contributing to its normalization. The findings underscore the urgent need to adapt public policies and prevention strategies to curb the spread of hate and protect targeted populations.
